Students are clustered with their cognitive peers in one of 4–5 core classrooms.  Classroom assignments are primarily based on academic and social development, rather than being dictated by chronological age.  Our teachers assess groups and classroom fit regularly throughout the year, and children move up when they are academically and developmentally ready, not at a fixed time during the academic year. This flexibility is possible because of our inquiry based framework, with academic content being initiated and completed in 6–7 week units. Mathematics placement also depends upon achievement and progress, rather than age. Classroom size is generally limited to ten or fewer students.
