Dunham Academy was founded and incorporated in 1998 in San Rafael, California by Jennifer and Daniel
Dunham as a nonprofit independent educational institution encompassing elementary and middle school levels
with students ranging in age from 5 to 14. The school has been designed to meet the needs of the area's
large population of academically talented students whose families seek for their children an academically
challenging education in a supportive and enriching environment. The school was founded out of the Dunham’s
love for children and concern for the often-overlooked educational needs of gifted children.
Jennifer Dunham is a Master Teacher with over seventeen years of experience teaching gifted students.
She holds a B.S. in Elementary Education with minors in both Art and Music from William Jewell College in
her home state of Missouri. She earned a Master’s Degree in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University
in Maryland. Her ongoing relationship with Johns Hopkins’s Center for Talented Youth, the premier national
organization active in identifying and serving the needs of gifted students, has been instrumental in the
design of Dunham Academy and providing opportunities to her students. Jennifer Dunham has been recognized
for having a profound impact on the development of her students by combining solid subject-matter instruction
with encouraging student initiative and engaging intellectual curiosity. Her prominence in the field of gifted
education has resulted in demand for her services as an independent consultant in the design and implementation
of programs for the gifted.
Daniel Dunham, Jennifer’s husband, retired early from his successful career in nuclear engineering to help
her realize her dream of creating a school for gifted students. Dan’s business experience has been applied
toward management of school finances, facilities and the like. His extensive classroom experience as an instructor
in the nuclear science field has been redirected toward teaching advanced science and mathematics to the Middle
School students. Dan received his education from the U.S. Navy.
